Density-wise two stage mammogram classification using texture exploiting descriptors

چکیده
Breast cancer is becoming increasing pervasive, and its early detection is an important step in saving life of any patient. Mammography is an important tool in breast cancer diagnosis. The most important step here is classification of mammogram patch as normal-abnormal and benign-malignant. Texture of a breast in a mammogram patch plays a big role in these classifications. We propose a new feature extraction descriptor called Histogram of Oriented Texture (HOT), which is a combination of Histogram of Gradients (HOG) and Gabor filter, and exploits this fact. We also revisit Pass Band Discrete Cosine Transform (PB-DCT) descriptor that captures texture information well. All features of a mammogram patch may not be useful. Hence, we apply a feature selection technique called Discrimination Potentiality (DP). Our resulting descriptors, DP-HOT and DP-PB-DCT, are compared with standard descriptors. Density of mammogram is important for classification, and has not been studied exhaustively. IRMA database, containing MIAS and DDSM datasets, is the standard database that provides mammogram patches, and most researchers have tested their frameworks only on a subset of patches from this database. We apply our two new descriptors on all images of IRMA database for density wise classification, and compare with standard descriptors. We achieve higher accuracy than all of the existing standard descriptors (100% for MIAS dataset, and more than 92% for DDSM dataset).

Classification of Mammogram Patterns using area measurements and the Standard Mammogram Form (SMF)
Our aim is to propose a new approach to breast pattern classification that will aid in the development of an automated mammographic density analysis procedure. Breast patterns broadly classify the mammographic density and density distribution of each mammogram in order to provide a framework for assessing the risk of breast cancer according to density. However, basic weaknesses of classifying m...
متن کاملSelection Mammogram Texture Descriptors Based on Statistics Properties Backpropagation Structure
Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system has been developed for the early detection of breast cancer, one of the most deadly cancer for women. The benign of mammogram has different texture from malignant. There are fifty mammogram images used in this work which are divided for training and testing. Therefore, the selection of the right texture to determine the level of accuracy of CAD system is im...
متن کاملAutomatic Classification of Mammographic Parenchymal Patterns: A Statistical Approach
Breast parenchymal density has been found to be a strong indicator for breast cancer risk [1], however, to date, measures of breast density are qualitative and require the judgement of the radiologist. Objective, quantitative measures of breast density are crucial tools for assessing the association between the risk of breast cancer and mammographic density as well as for quantification of dens...
متن کاملA Suruliandi and G Murugeswari: Empirical Evaluation of Lbp and Its Derivates for Abnormality Detection in Mammogram Images
Digital image processing techniques are useful in abnormality detection in mammogram images. Recently, texture based image segmentation of mammogram images has become popular due to its better precision and accuracy. Local Binary Pattern has been a recently proposed texture descriptor which attracted the research community rigorously towards texture based analysis of digital images. Many textur...
متن کاملDecide, Detect and Classify Benign and Malignant in Mammograms Using Cv-partitioning Method
In recent years, the stage determining and classifying the mammogram as Benign or Malignant is somewhat complicated process in the medical research. In the earlier papers many classification techniques, CAD designs and feature extraction methods are used constantly for mammogram classification, and has its own advantages and limitations. To overcome the limitations, in this paper a novel approa...
